The government recognizes the importance of local historic documents to the national development and, therefore, established the Taiwan Provincial Common History Historica on June 1, 1948, to compile the common history of Taiwan Province. The Taiwan Provincial Common History Historica was changed to Historical Research Committee of Taiwan Province in July 1949, which comprises of several departments – the committee members and editors studying the documents, the Editing Section, the Collection Section and the Arrangement Section that gather, summarize, store, publish and modify documents-related publications. The Committee was affiliated to the Civil Affairs Department in 1958, to the Cultural Affairs Department in July 1997; and to the Taiwan Provincial government in July 1999 after the latter adjusted its structure and reoriented its services. On January 1, 2002, the Committee was affiliated to the Academia Historica and its name was changed to Taiwan Historica.
