"The Red River Historical Museum was founded in 1976 by a group of civic-minded citizens who were concerned about the loss of heritage in the area. The City of Sherman leased the historic Carnegie Library building to the founding group and volunteers ran the museum until the late 1980's when the first experienced museum personnel were hired.
The mission of the Red River Historical Museum is to collect, preserve and to interpret objects of historical significance to Grayson County and the greater North Texas Region. The mission statement was set out in the by-laws which were adopted at the formation of the museum in 1976 and were approved by the first governing Board of Directors."
