"In 1980 the gallery was founded by the Blackburn Center Director, Roberta McLeod. It serves as a laboratory which aims to inspire young artists and others to appreciate the arts by providing exhibition space, training on developing, designing, installing and promoting their art, while learning the business of galleries including how to build art collections.

The gallery affords the Howard University community the opportunity to experience extraordinary exhibitions by a multitude of artists including new artists, national and international artists and works from major collections.

It also serves as a performing arts space presenting arts lectures, book signings and readings, receptions and an annual “Fine Arts Series” in collaboration with the Music Department."
