El Museo Arqueológico de Santiago (MAS) fue fundado en 1981. Durante más de veinte años entregó innumerables testimonios de vida y arte de las culturas que habitaron el actual territorio chileno, algunas de ellas aún presentes, antes de la llegada de los españoles.

Tras un período de remodelación, el MAS hoy reabre sus puertas al público chileno y extranjero, en una nueva ubicación, junto al Museo de Artes Visuales, en el histórico Barrio Lastarria del centro de Santiago. Se crea así, un gran centro de difusión de los valores de las culturas precolombinas y la plástica contemporánea nacional, una línea a través del tiempo que conecta el pasado y el presente.

La primera muestra del nuevo MAS, “Chile Ancestral”, ofrece en dos nuevas salas y 175 m² un recorrido por el arte precolombino en Chile.

De norte a sur del Chile actual, los objetos tanto de uso cotidiano como ceremonial, dan cuenta de la vida de hombres y mujeres, que algún día los crearon, usaron y expresaron a través de ellos sus creencias y valores culturales.

Silenciosos y a su vez elocuentes testimonios de textiles, cerámica, líticos, cestería, joyas y tallados en madera, nos hablan del pasado, en un montaje que resalta la estética de las piezas.

Algunos aspectos destacados: la exhibición de una momia de la cultura Chinchorro, cuya práctica mortuoria es anterior en 3.000 años a la de las momias egipcias. El complejo alucinógeno de San Pedro de Atacama, ritual mediante el cual se conectaban hombres y dioses, presente en tabletas de rapé y otros objetos usados por los chamanes.

Los pueblos Aymara, Mapuche, Fueguino y Pascuense, son etnias vivas, descendientes de las culturas originarias, presentes también en el MAS a través de objetos de uso cotidiano que honran la memoria de sus ancestros.

The Archaeological Museum of Santiago (MAS) was founded in 1981. For more than twenty years gave countless testimonies of life and art of cultures that inhabited the present territory of Chile, some of them are still present, before the arrival of the Spaniards.

After a period of renovation, the MAS today reopened its doors to the Chilean public and abroad, in a new location, next to the Museum of Visual Arts in the historic district of downtown Santiago Lastarria. This creates a major center for the dissemination of the values of the pre-Columbian cultures and national contemporary art, a line through time that connects the past and present.

The first sample of the new MAS, "Ancestral Chile, offers two new rooms and 175 m² on a journey through the pre-Columbian art in Chile.

From north to south of Chile today, both the objects of daily use as a ceremonial show the lives of men and women who created them one day, and used them to express themselves through their beliefs and cultural values.

Turn silent and eloquent testimony of textiles, ceramics, stone, baskets, jewelry and wood carvings, tell us about the past, in a show that highlights the aesthetic of the pieces.

Some highlights: the exhibition of a mummy of the Chinchorro culture, which is earlier mortuary practice in the 3000 years of Egyptian mummies. The complex hallucinogenic San Pedro de Atacama, ritual by which men and gods were connected, in snuffing tablets and other objects used by the shamans.

Peoples Aymara, Mapuche, and Fueguino Pascuense, ethnicities are living descendants of the original cultures, present in the MAS through everyday objects that honor the memory of their ancestors.
